Graphic and web design FAQs: costs, timings and how I work
Helpful answers to the questions Brighton, Hove and Sussex businesses ask most: what a website or logo costs, how long it takes, how revisions work and who owns the final files.
Prices at a glance
Every project is quoted individually. These guide prices give you a realistic starting point.
Costs
How much does a small business website cost in Brighton and Hove?
A professional website for a small business typically costs from £299 for a simple landing page to around £4,500 for a larger site, or £5,000+ for an online shop. The price depends on the size of the site and what it needs to do.
| Website type | Typical cost | Best for | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter / landing page | £299–£600 | Sole traders and new start-ups | 1–3 pages with basic contact information |
| Standard business site | £1,200–£3,500 | Local services, cafes, trades, clinics | 5–10 pages with local SEO for Brighton and Hove searches |
| Advanced business site | £4,000–£8,500+ | Established businesses needing custom features | 10–20 pages, custom copy, bookings or service integrations |
| Online shop | £2,500–£5,000+ | Independent shops and online retailers | Shopify or WooCommerce, secure payments, up to 200 products |
Running costs: budget for your domain name (£10–£25 a year), hosting (£60–£180 a year*) and business email (£3–£10 a month per person).

How much does a logo cost?
It depends on whether you need a logo on its own or a full brand identity.
- Logo design (£299–£600): ideal for start-ups and sole traders. Includes a primary logo, a couple of variations and the final files in every format you'll need.
- Full brand identity (£2,500–£4,000+): for established or growing businesses. Your logo plus a brand guide covering typography, colours, image style and assets for social media and signage.
I can also set up a Brand Kit in your Canva account and provide training on how to use it, so your team can create and publish themselves while keeping everything consistent and 'on brand' without specialist software.
How do you charge, and do you need a deposit?
It depends on the job. I can work per project, by the hour or on a monthly retainer. Most clients prefer a fixed project price so they know the cost up front.
Once we've talked through your project, I'll send a written estimate before any work starts. New clients pay a 30% deposit before I begin.
Can you work within my budget?
Usually, yes. Tell me your budget and I'll tell you honestly what it can achieve, and where the money is best spent. If it won't stretch to everything at once, we can plan the work in stages.
Timings
How long does a website take?
- Starter / landing page: 2–3 weeks, ideal if your text and images are ready.
- Standard business site: 4–8 weeks, covering planning, design, copywriting, build, local SEO and testing.
- Online shop or advanced site: 8–12+ weeks, allowing for product catalogues, payments, shipping and bookings.
The biggest factor is content. Delays usually happen while waiting for text, photos or feedback.
How long does a logo take?
- Logo design: 2–3 weeks, covering research, sketches, refinements and final files.
- Full brand identity: 4–6 weeks, including strategy, several design directions, typography, colours and, if required, your Canva Brand Kit.
The exact timing depends on the scope and how quickly you can give feedback.
How quickly can you turn a project around?
You'll get a timeline with your estimate, before any work starts. I'll always work to your deadline where I can, and tell you in advance if something isn't possible.
How I work
What is your design process?
Every project starts with a briefing, where I get to know your business, your goals and who you're trying to reach. Then I research your market and competitors, so the design is based on more than personal taste.
Next I sketch and develop a few concepts, refine the strongest and present them to you. Once you've picked a direction, I polish it with your feedback and prepare the final files, ready for print or the web. You'll know where things stand at every stage.
How do you make sure the design fits my brand?
It starts with listening. In the briefing I'll ask about your values, your customers and where you want the business to go, and go through any brand guidelines you already have. I also look at your competitors, so your design stands apart from theirs.
I then show you options built on that brief and refine them with your feedback until they feel right. Nothing is finalised until you've approved it.
How do revisions work?
Each estimate includes a set number of revision rounds, agreed up front, so you know exactly what's covered. I make changes promptly and keep you updated throughout. If you need more rounds than planned, I'll tell you the cost before doing the work.
Why hire a freelance designer in Brighton rather than an agency?
You get direct access to senior creative experience, without paying for an agency's account managers and office overheads. I bring 30+ years of typography, colour and brand strategy, so your logo, website and marketing all look like they came from the same business.
You also deal with one person from first idea to launch, which means quicker decisions and nothing lost in translation.
What sets you apart from other designers?
Experience, mostly. I've spent more than 30 years in design studios and advertising agencies, working on campaigns for the All Blacks, Dulux and Tourism New Zealand, and I'm a member of the Chartered Society of Designers.
I also cover both sides of a project. I can design your brand and build your website, and I know print inside out so that what you approve on screen is what comes back from the printer.
Payment and ownership
Do I own the copyright to the final design?
Yes. Once the project is finished and paid for, I transfer the copyright to you, so you can use, change and reproduce it however you like. I keep the right to show the work in my portfolio unless we agree otherwise, and I never share anything confidential.
If a project uses outside suppliers such as photographers or illustrators, their work may come with its own licence. I'll show you those terms and costs before commissioning them.
What are your payment terms?
Full payment is required within 7-days of date of invoice.
Areas and extra services
Do you work with businesses outside Sussex?
Yes. I regularly work with businesses in Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Lewes, Eastbourne, Shoreham-by-Sea, Haywards Heath and Crawley, and I'm happy to meet face to face.
For clients further afield, from London to Auckland, I work by video call and share designs through Figma and Canva. The service is the same wherever you are.
Do you offer printing, copywriting or other services?
Yes. Alongside graphic design I offer website design, copywriting, technical SEO, hosting, email marketing, photography, illustration and print management. One person looking after all of it keeps your brand consistent and saves you managing several suppliers.
We use Canva. Can you help our team get on-brand results?
Yes. I can design a set of professional Canva templates for your brand, or convert your existing materials, so your team starts from something that already looks right. I'll set up your Brand Kit with your colours, fonts and logos, and show your team how to use shared templates.
Can't find your answer?
Ask away. I'll reply within 24 hours, and if it's a question others are likely to ask, I'll add it here.
